FESTIVAL
CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH WEST / WEST MIDLANDS
Not a day
goes by without Cheltenham hosting some form of festival.
There are festivals dedicated to all kinds of, stuff.
There are sporty festivals, including the Cheltenham
Cricket Festival and, of course, the National Hunt
Festival. Then there's festivals dedicated to fun and
entertainment, such as the Jazz Festival, the Music
Festival and the Fringe Festival. And of course, all
tastes have to be catered for, so there's even some weird
events like the Science Festival and the Folk Festival.
If you have a particularly fond memory of one of the
town's festival's, share it with the world by sending in
a review.
NATIONAL
HUNT FESTIVAL
Prestbury Park, also known as Cheltenham
Racecourse, is one of the UK's premier racecourses and
ranks alongside Ascot, Goodwood, Aintree and Folkestone
Racecourse as being a 'must visit' on the calendar of all
gambling addicts. Only a handful of events take place at
Cheltenham Racecourse each year, and the highlight of the
season - foot and mouth disease permitting - is the
National Hunt Festival.
For one week in March, the town is
invaded (not literally) by The Irish, 'Hoo-Rah Henries'
from Londinium, big horses, little people with squeeky
voices wearing funny hats and silk tops, and gambling
addicts from all over England and Wales (not Scotland
though). The town becomes awash in a swirling sea of
Guinness and dodgy twenty pound notes and a good time is
had by all, especially hotel owners, taxi drivers, pub
landlords, pick-pockets from Gloucester and any newsagent
selling copies of the Racing Post.
It is
advisable to bring lots of money with you if you plan to
attend this event as it's not very cheap drinking twenty
pints of Guinness a day, paying a tout for a forged
entrance ticket, losing a fortune on the dead cert the
bloke you met in the toilets told you to back, and paying
the Police Officer the fifty quid fine for urinating in
the doorway of Marks & Spencers. Oh yeah, for some
reason most of the local pubs charge about fifty pound
for a cooked breakfast so you may want to consider
bringing your own.
THE CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL
Cheltenham hosts
'The Christmas Festival' each year, usually towards the
end of December, where the local townsfolk celebrate the
birth of a great man - Santa Christmas. During this
festival season, it is obligatory for gifts, called
Christmas presents, and cards, called Christmas cards, to
be exchanged between friends and family. At positions
around the town special decorations, called Christmas
decorations, are put in place to provide the entire town
with a warm festive Christmas glow. It is also tradition
to erect special lights around the town, called Christmas
lights, which are switched on by none other than Santa
Christmas himself, aided by top celebrities from the
town's local commercial radio stations.
Although
this festival is essential in order to show our gratitude
to Santa Christmas, it can become a drain on the expenses
of the townsfolk and local council, as a result I
understand talks are currently underway to franchise the
Christmas idea nationwide. Without an adequate franchise
deal it may become necessary to hold the annual Christmas
celebrations once every two years.
