BEECHWOOD SHOPPING CENTRE

I'm feeling very negative about Beechwood Shopping Centre luv, let's go somewhere else.A great place to go if you want to escape the crowds of the High Street.  Beechwood is a shopping emporium offering you the chance to browse around famous name shops including Ciro Citterio and The Disney Store.  You can also have your nails varnished, buy a mobile phone, eat a baguette, drink some expensive coffee, buy some even more expensive ice cream, and then look at cheap CDs.  A venture into the centre of Beechwood will have you believing you are in a tropical rainforest as you fight your way through big trees, negotiate rapid waterfalls, and talk to a drunk bloke called Dougie.

A lot of shops tend to spend an alarmingly short amount of time in their Beechwood unit before going bust, and local people have had many laughs placing wagers on the next victim. With all this fun under one roof, what else could you possibly ask for in a shopping centre - well, some decent shops maybe?

PINK PLANET GAMES EXCHANGE (town centre-ish!)

(Review very kindly submitted by Simon Underwood). After hearing my mate utter the words 'Pink Planet' I became slightly worried. However, after visiting it I became bemused by the huge selection of Playstation, N64 and PC games. A great place to buy second-hand consoles. Also a must-buy is the fact that they sell U.S. copies of Maxim in there for only two pound whereas WHSmith sell it for three-pound-fifty! Sod Electronics Boutique, shop here!

JONES SHOE SHOP (somewhere in town)

(Impressive review compiled by Jason Baxter). Go to Jones Shoe Shop.

REGENT ARCADE SHOPPING CENTRE

This shopping arcade is like Beechwood in many ways.  The main difference is that Regent Arcade is good, whilst Beechwood is crap.  The Regent Arcade has everything you need, plus a few things you probably don't.  Famous names include River Island, BhS, The Body Shop, Mothercare, Clintons, The Sony Centre and TKMax.  Of course, it's not all big shops, there's a few crappy little independent ones as well. There are countless shoe shops, a lot of mens fashion, even more female fashion, a shop that sells a lot of watches, a place for buying spectacles and a little shop overflowing with different kinds of tobacco and snuff.

Many visitors don't just use the Regent Arcade for its' excellent shopping facilities, they use if for the added fun it has to offer.  The squeeky floor entertains some people, the glass lift entertains others, but the main incentive for entering the Regent Arcade is the big Wishing Fish Clock.  Thousands upon thousands of people from around the world flock to Cheltenham to be in with a chance of seeing this modern day wonder perform its' task.  Upon every hour the clock stirs into action, playing a magical rendition of "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" whilst, spookily enough, blowing liquid bubbles upon the audience.

ANISHA STORES (Prestbury Road)

A typical picture of a high street (in Egypt)The best place in town if you want out-of-date products. The area just to the left of the till is stacked with mouthwatering items including six month old orange juice and stale packets of crisps. Wander into the well stocked drinks section at the back of the incredibly large store and no matter how quickly you try to catch him out, Mr Hawkeye will always have his eye on you. If you are under 16 this is an ideal place to purchase your cigarettes, likewise, the alcohol law doesn't seem to be enforced either so 15 year olds should have no trouble buying a 5 litre bottle of mega-strong cider.

Anisha Stores sports a lovely window display, containing hand-drawn pictures of items on sale, a photo of the owners dressed in cowboy gear, and a press cutting from a raid by Customs & Excise. This store is certainly worth a visit - just take your own duster as a lot of the stock seems to have built up an unusual amount of dust and grime.

CAVENDISH HOUSE (on the pedestrianised bit of the Promenade)

(Review kindly supplied by someone with no name). I think that Cavendish House is good.

BOOTS (in the High Street, look for the flag!)

(Submitted by someone else with no name). This infamous chemists sells everything from headache tablets to mobile phones. Best visited on a Sunday when the staff out-number the customers. Boots is a happy, friendly place full of people smiling (apart from the female staff due to their very attractive uniform!).

TESCO SUPERSTORE (off Gloucester Road / Tewkesbury Road)

Even grocery shopping can be fun in CheltenhamProbably the best supermarket in Western Europe.  The big Tesco, located just outside of the town centre, makes the otherwise dull task of grocery shopping fun.  The staff actively encourage you to go wild in the aisles as they organise piggy-back races, video fights, and food throwing competitions. As this store is open 24 Hours most nights you can have some great fun looking for bargains at 3am. Oh, you can get a nice unsliced 800g pack of white bread for only 10pence if you get there about 9.30pm on a Saturday.

Tesco Metro has now become a 24 Hour store, so sadly I don't really get to the superstore much nowadays. Shame really, as I used to like waking up about two in the morning with a Maynard's Wine Gum craving and taking the 15 minute stroll to Tesco with nothing more than my trusty leather football to keep me company.

(IMPORTANT UNDERAGE ALCOHOL PURCHASE UPDATE, kindly sent in by Andy Green). Apparently the store has recently stopped the sale of alcohol to underage people according to one source who is underage.
